Terms & Conditions

Reservation and Initial Payment

The period of hire will be as agreed between Churchdale Canal Cruises (the Owners) and yourselves (The Hirers). A deposit of 25% is required with each booking, with the balance due six weeks prior to arrival. If the date of the booking is within six weeks, the full balance is payable.

Cancellations

In the event of your booking being cancelled, the deposit will be forfeited. If you cancel your holiday at any time before it is due to start, you are still liable to pay the full amount due unless we are able to re-let the boat for the period that you have reserved. In this case, the deposit will not be refunded. We strongly advise you to take out holiday insurance to guard against this. Please note: under no circumstances will the Owners be liable for any accidents, including damage or loss to guests’ property on or off the boat at any time.

Arrivals & Departures

Arrivals are welcome at 3pm on the date your holiday begins. If you are intending to arrive later than 3pm please phone us so that we can make arrangements for you. Please vacate your boat by 10am on the day your holiday finishes to allow us to clean it thoroughly before the next guests arrive. We may inspect the boat before you leave the site to ensure that it has been left in a clean and tidy condition and that there have been no breakages or other damage.

Damage Waiver Fee

For a £30 non-refundable Damage Waiver Payment you will be provided with protection from any liability or loss, damage or accident to the boat or its equipment during the time of your holiday period. The amount of this payment will be shown on your final booking form. Please do not burn candles or other naked flames in the boat.

The Damage Waiver Payment Excludes losses arising from:-

  • Malicious Damage, Negligence or Deliberate Damage to the boat, its equipment, the waterway, other boats or structures
  • Speeding Above 4mph (reported and/or witnessed)
  • Return of the boat in an untidy condition
  • We shall claim the full cost of repairs, replacement or compensation, should we receive a report of the any of the above
  • Return of the boat past the expiry time of the hire agreement. (See Late Return Deposit below)

Late Return Deposit

A deposit of £200 will be required before the boat is handed over. This will be refunded in full upon the boat being returned on time (10.00am) on the last day of your holiday. A charge of £20 per half hour will be deducted from the deposit; in the event of your late arrival.

Safety Rules, Basic Common Sense and Navigation Bye Laws

The Hirer(s) must agree to the following:

  • Cruising only between sunrise and sunset. (No night cruising)
  • Cruising will NOT exceed more than 4 mph
  • Never create a wash that breaks on the bank (even at 4mph this is possible)
  • Slow right down past moored boats
  • Only carry those named on the Initial Booking Form
  • Do not carry portable heaters, toasters or additional; electrical appliances that have not been provided by Churchdale Canal Cruises.
  • Hirer(s) MUST at all times comply with British Waterways and the Environment Agency bye-laws: these specifically include leaving lock paddles in the correct position and being considerate to other waterway users and property
  • Curchdale Canal Cruises really want you to benefit from a stress-free fun holiday. But may we remind you that in fact it is illegal to be drunk in charge of any vessel on British Waterways water.

Parking at Base

There is parking for 2 cars per boat but we accept no liability for loss or damage to customers’ vehicles. You are advised not to leave valuables in your vehicles.

The Owners Right to Refuse

The Owners reserve the right to refuse to hand over the boat to any person(s) who in our opinion is not suitable to take charge. In such cases, all hire charges will be refunded in full and all liability of the Hirer and Owner shall thereupon cease.

Exemptions

Churchdale Canal Cruises shall not be liable for concerns arising beyond the Company’s reasonable control, or not due to the Company’s negligence or wilful default including without limitation: death or personal injury of Hirers, their crew and passengers; loss or damage to property; non-fulfilment or interruption of the reservation; delays; breakdowns; mechanical problems; defects; damage; restrictions on cruising; obstructions; repairs to waterways; non-availability of routes; storms, floods, drought, ice shortage of water and other weather conditions; non-availability of fuel; or in respect of any loss, damage, expense, injury or claim.

Locks

A full demonstration will be given by the Owners to the Hirer(s) to make sure they are confident with the handling of the boat. Where the hirer(s) are not familiar with the working of the locks, they will be taken through their first lock. Although the locks are one of the most exciting of events on a narrowboat holiday, especially for children, they are also the most dangerous; if the Health and Safety procedures are not followed! The Owners will discuss the lock safety procedures on the day of arrival.

Pets

Well behaved pets are welcome (maximum 2 pets per boat) on condition that whilst on board they are kept under strict control and no fouling allowed on the boat or towpaths; please bring your disposable bags. Pets are not to be left unattended on the boat at any time. Pets are not allowed on seating or bedding therefore could you please could you bring your pets’ own bedding, towels for drying and blankets etc. There is a charge of £30 per pet per week.

Breakdown, Repairs and Emegencies

We take great pride and care ensuring that our boat is serviced and maintained to a high standard. However, if a breakdown should occur contact us immediately where upon appropriate action will be taken. All repairs are the responsibility of the Churchdale Canal Cruises and should, in no circumstances, be carried out without the Owner’s consent. You must not tow or be allowed to tow any other vessel without the Owner’s permission. A 24 hour callout is available to prevent any worry to yourselves.

Accidents

In the unfortunate event of an accident; simply ‘Do Not Panic’ and under NO circumstances must the hirer admit any liability. Firstly, contact the Owner. You will be required to obtain the following information:

1) Full details of the boats involved and index numbers; 2) Names, addresses and telephone numbers of those person(s) involved and 3) Name(s) and addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses.

Fuels, Pump outs

The boat is handed over with a full diesel tank, two full gas bottles and with the toilet holding tank pumped out. This will, more often than not, last for a whole week’s cruising. Hirers are advised that additional fuels and pump-outs are necessary on longer cruises. (Average price for pump out of toilet holding tank is between £15 - £20) Any additional fuels or pump-outs required during the period of hire are the hirer's responsibility.

Age Restrictions

Bookings from persons under the age of 21 cannot be accepted. No person under the age of 21 may control the narrowboat, unless under the direct supervision of a responsible adult member of the party.

Cycles/ Canoes

As we are very proud of our boat and its appearance, it is unfortunate that we are unable to allow canoes or cycles on board. However, this is at the Owner’s discretion and these items may be considered under certain circumstances.
